MTEST Supports Renewal of Strategic Partnership Between UTT and NCIC

The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) welcomes the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Trinidad and Tobago and the National Council of Indian Culture, reaffirming a shared commitment to preserving and promoting Trinidad and Tobago’s rich cultural heritage through education, research, and collaboration.

Originally established in 2022, the partnership continues to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions in advancing East Indian culture while supporting national development. The renewed agreement provides a framework for collaborative initiatives in cultural preservation, research, education, documentation, and community engagement, contributing to a deeper appreciation of Trinidad and Tobago’s multicultural identity.

Delivering remarks at the signing ceremony on Wednesday 2nd July, 2026,  Senator Professor Emeritus the Honourable Prakash Persad underscored the importance of aligning cultural initiatives with national development priorities.

The Minister noted that partnerships of this nature create opportunities not only to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage but also to expand research, innovation, education, entrepreneurship, and the commercialisation of cultural assets. He emphasised that strategic collaborations between academia and cultural organisations play an important role in developing human capital while creating sustainable economic and educational opportunities.

Also addressing the ceremony, Professor Selwyn R. Cudjoe highlighted the transformative role of education in preserving culture and encouraged both organisations to ensure that the renewed Memorandum of Understanding becomes an active partnership that delivers meaningful outcomes for future generations.

The renewed agreement reflects the Government’s continued commitment to fostering collaboration between tertiary education institutions and national stakeholders to advance research, innovation, cultural preservation, and inclusive national development.

MTEST commends UTT and the NCIC for their continued leadership and looks forward to the positive impact this partnership will have in strengthening cultural awareness, expanding educational opportunities, and preserving the rich heritage of Trinidad and Tobago for generations to come.
